FAQ

+ What is Your Practice Model?

Exceptional service and friendly, compassionate care, is what you will always receive from the experienced team at Carson Surgical Group! Our board-certified surgeons, Drs. King, Halow and Beal have years of experience in a broad range of general, vascular, endovascular and thoracic procedures. We offer the most technologically advanced, and minimally invasive surgical procedures to treat diseases affecting the abdomen, breast, colon, blood vessels, chest, neck, and lung. Our Carson City and new Minden locations are the only practices in Northern Nevada with free-standing, fully certified vascular ultrasound labs. Our labs feature registered vascular ultrasonographers to diagnose, evaluate, and follow diseases of the arteries and veins non-invasively without needles or contrast agents. From in office varicose vein treatment, to state of the art cancer surgery, to complex reconstruction for peripheral arterial disease, you can always rest assured that you are in the best of hands at Carson Surgical Group.

+ What are the common arterial diseases?

Vascular disease consists of Peripheral Arterial Disease, also known as PAD – hardening of the arteries, and Aneurism disease – a weakening of the artery wall — which leads to blockages within the artery. These blockages and hardening result in impaired blood flow to the vital organs and extremities. Any blood vessel can be affected by these diseases. PAD typically affects the blood vessels in the neck feeding the brain and the arteries in the legs. Aneurisms usually involve the abdominal aorta – the major blood vessel which carries blood from the heart to the intestines, kidneys and legs. Both diseases will continue to worsen over time if untreated.

+ Do you do vascular testing?

Carson Surgical Group offers three types of painless ultrasound screening exams. Our technologists conduct Carotid Arteries/Stroke Assessment, Abdominal Aorta Scan for aneurysm and Peripheral Arteries Testing for significant plaque. We use high-quality ultrasound imaging to check major arteries and our tests are interpreted by Dr. Kevin Halow, MD, or Shannon H. Beal, both board certified surgeons, Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation.

+ Who should get vascular screening?

Risk factors for vascular disease include family history, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Symptoms of PAD include calf pain while walking, non-healing wounds and stroke-like symptoms. Symptoms of aneurysm in the abdominal aorta include abdominal pain, low back pain, groin pain, gastro intestinal symptoms such as nausea or weight loss.
